TMJ is an abbreviation of Temporal Mandibular Joint. The bone above the jaw is temporal bone, the lower jaw is the mandible - where they meet is the Temporal Mandibular joint. It is located in front and slightly below the ear. TMJ disorders can be associated with diverse symptoms like headache, tooth ache, neck pain, ear pain, jaw pain, clicking/popping of the joint. TMJ disorders can be uncomfortable and the source of such symptoms are most common caused by grinding or clenching of the teeth (Bruxism) done most commonly during sleeping. Bruxism causes stress on the joint and on its supporting structures like muscles, ligaments and teeth. The stress related can be transmitted as pain in the TMJ, head, teeth, shoulders and even arm. Other causes for TMJ problems can be malocclusion or bad bite, and arthritic changes in the joint due to mechanical stress.
However, TMJ symptoms can be relieved with the use of an appliance similar to a mouth guard that may be called night guard, splints, bite guard or other names. Splints are constructed to your bite (occlusal) plane specifications on the upper or lower arch. With the splint in place the lower jaw can move without interference relieving the stress created by bruxism providing significant releif from TJM symptoms. |
