Architecture of the Office:
We at Verma Dental don't just think about sedation for a patient who suffers from dental anxiety or dental phobia. Instead we employ all methods available to us to reduce our patients anxiety.  In an effort to reduce stress we have paid attention to the architecture of our office. The office design and lighting is non-institutional, appearing more like an art gallery than a dental office. Rich colors and textures appear on the floor and walls. Our staff members are attentive and courteous.  Our "waiting room" is a "welcome center."  We have also made available for our patients the "myvu" system to view DVD's with headphones so that the patient has the ability to tune out the noise of drilling and tooth preparation allowing Dr Verma to complete your dental needs as quickly and painlessly as possible.  Anxiety levels are drastically reduced when the sounds of dental work are obliterated. Dr Verma also takes her time in educating and involving her patient's in their treatment planning which helps to provide a high level of confidence with you our patient, as well as a low lever of anxiety or apprehension of the unknown.

Oral Sedatives
Oral sedative medications such as diazepam/Valium can be prescribed - usually Dr Verma will have patients take a dose the night before a dental procedure so that anxiety does not prevent a restful night.  Our patients can also take a second dose 30 minutes to an hour before the dental appointment, depending on the severity of the anxiety. Also, we can prescribe halcion (also known as sleep dentistry) for very anxious patients or for patients who are having full mouth rehabilitation or implants placed that can be done in just one visit.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation
At Verma Cosmetic and Family dentistry you can also opt to have conscious inhalation sedation, nitrous oxide gas (also known as laughing gas) which can be used to induce a state of relaxation.  Nitrous does not require an overnight fast prior to use

FAQ
Do I still need to have local anesthetic if I am sedated with medication?
Yes, Oral sedatives do not provide pain relief, so a local anesthetic will need to be administered also.

Are there any side effects?
Depending on the sedative being used the most common side effects can be nausea, vomiting and headache.

How long are you sedated for?
Again, it depends on the sedative used but in general the effect last for 4-6 hrs. If however, nitrous is being used the effect lasts for only as long as you are inhaling it.
